Elephants

Where elephants live?

Elephants live in parts of Africa and Asia where there is grass and forest. They are the biggest land animals on earth.

Baby elephants

A baby elephant is called a calf. It can stand up just 30 minutes after it is born. As grows up, it likes to stay close to its mother.
Calves drink milk from their mothers until they are about two years old. Then they start to eat grass, leaves and branches.

Looking after one another.

Elephants are very caring. This mother raises her trunk and trumpets loudly to scare off other animals. Elephants like to bathe in the mud together. The other elephants will make sure that this calf doesn’t get stuck.

Family life.

Female elephants are called cows and males and called bulls. Mothers and babies live in a herd with other cow elephants. Young bull elephants leave their mothers and sisters to live together when they are teenagers. These two are testing each other’s strength.

Growing up

The calves have to learn how to use their trunks and where to find food, water and salt. These calves are playing together. They are having fun while learning the skills they will need to survive.

Eating and drinking

Elephants are herbivores –they eat mainly grass, leaves, fruit, roots and tree bark. A grown-up elephant can spend up to 18 hours a day eating. Look how this elephant stretches its trunk to reach the juiciest leaves. Elephants need to drink a lot of water each day. These elephants have traveled many miles to find a water hole.

Keeping clean and healthy

Elephants blow dust over themselves to keep cool and to stop insects biting them. This elephant is having a shower using its trunk.

Having fun.

Elephants love to swim. This one is using its trunk like a snorkel. A roll in the wet mud keeps this elephant cool as well as getting rid of insects.

Keeping in touch.

Elephants are very friendly. These two are saying ‘Hello’ by touching each other gently with their trunks. If an elephant goes off on its own, it can keep in touch with the herd by making very low sounds that only other elephants can hear.

Elephants and people.

Elephants have lived and worked side-by-side with people for thousands of years. Today it is more difficult for elephants and people to live together peacefully. There are more people living in Africa and they are taking much of the elephants’ land to grow food.

Elephants in danger.

These park rangers are setting out to stop poachers from killing elephants. It is against the law to kill elephants without asking permission. But some people still kill them so they can sell their ivory tusks.

Helping elephants to survive.

This elephant is being moved to a reserve. It is a heavy job and lots of people need to help. Elephants can live safely in this reserve, now and in the future.
