1 – Beginner
Speaking –
Begins to name concrete objects.
Repeats words and phrases.
Uses basic survival English vocabulary such as: “I don’t understand.” Or “May I go to drink water?”
Reading –
Is learning letter sounds
Learning to sound out simple words phonetically
Reads very basic phonetically controlled books
Writing –
Copies words and simple sentences from the board
Can sound out simple words well enough to write
Uses frequent nonstandard word order when writing sentences
Is learning appropriate letter shape and size
Is learning to start a sentence with a capital letter and end it with a period
Listening –
Understands very little English
Can follow simple instructions
Relies a lot on gestures, repetitions and illustrations
Speaking –
Begins to express personal and survival needs
Begins to answer simple questions using single-word utterances or phrases
Speaks hesitantly using limited, functional vocabulary
Uses mainly the present tense
Reading –
Can sound out words and read sight words
Reads simple sentences with some hesitation and mispronunciations
Relies a lot on illustrations and basic vocabulary for comprehension
Writing –
Can write simple sentences using known vocabulary mainly in the present tense
Uses a capital letter to begin a sentence and a period to end it.
Starts to take risks when writing
Listening –
Understands one step instructions given in simple vocabulary
Understands class conversations and simple stories at this level
Still relies on gestures, repetitions and illustrations for comprehension
